The Book Thief Pages 46-55
This section of the book was rather interesting to me. It introduced a new friend of Liesel's: Rudy. Rudy is a very interesting character in my opinion, especially since the author was able to develop him very well. The author gave Rudy someone to look up to via the Jesse Owens incident, which I defiantly would have not believed if the author did not develop his admiration for Jesse Owens to such an extent.
"The church aimed itself toward the sky" was a very cool quote in my opinion because it gave an inanimate object a human quality: a high aim or goal.
Rudy's father was also heavily developed during this section. But I guess he has every right to be when you have a son that would cover himself in charcoal and run in the Olympic games because he admires Jesse Owens so much. Rudy's father, though, seems like he loves his son, though; sort of like Liesel and her mom's relationship with each other.
I am so exited to continue reading, and I hope those who come across this blog will be inspired to read this book as well
I agree that Rudy is an... interesting... character. I agree that the author did really force you to remember Rudy's role model. If it had been simply stated, "Rudy looked up to the black American athlete Jesse Owens," I probably wouldn't have remembered it. But by making it such a prominent part of the story, it is now something that we can't forget. I think that you're right about the relationship thing- Mr. Steiner DOES love Rudy- he's just a harsh person. (But only in this instance- he generally seems like a happy, nice person.) Also, love the "Spoiler Alert."
