The Book Thief Pages 3-15

The Book Thief pages 3-15

I thought that this section I read was both confusing and yet very interesting. When death talks about colors, it confused me, and though he has explained it a bit, I still don't get what he means. I know and I am exited for when they are going to explain it later. When he drew 3 symbols to represent the 3 "main" colors, I was interested that he represents colors with symbols, just as we represent colors with words.

When death wanted to say sorry to the book thief, I was shocked because I did not expect death to have feelings, and yet he had feelings. But he couldn't because "they" wouldn't allow it. I am very exited to find out just who this "they"

I would have never guessed that Death had feelings and was compassionate for other people. He made it sound like he wasn't killing people, he was just the janitor sweeping them out of existence. He makes it sound like he was stuck with the job and he could not do anything about it. That is very interesting that the author made the narrator ,"death", be reluctant to do his job.

I thought that the quote " Please, be calm, despite that previous threat.I am all bluster—I am not violent. I am not malicious. I am a result." This makes me wonder: "a result of what?". It also really makes me exited to continue through the book.

  3. Fantastic Job on your post Keaten. I also said that too in my post about how Death has different emotions and human affection. The Death that is described to us in this chapter is very different from our perspective. We tend to think of this nasty dark ghost in a torn cloak waiting to collect your soul but it all changes when the author tries to bring Death out and to tell you that he isn't that bad. He really cares about whether you think he is violent and scary or not, he really tries to keep you on the bright side about him and keep on reminding you that this is his job.

  4. I love your point about death being a "janitor, sweeping them out of existence." I hadn't thought about the book this way. Like you and Jason, I also want to find out who controls death. Maybe fate? Life?

  5. I love your point about death not being able to do things due to the people called 'they'. I never thought about this before and it really makes me wonder. Who is in charge of death? Also, when you said how death was just a "janitor, sweeping them out of existence.", it makes me think about how it isn't death that kills you, it is just that death is the one that frees your soul. After reading this, I noticed how death can be kind too.
